Enron and the unasked question

What happens when nobody performs the Socratic function

Context

The book uses Enron as the empirical anchor for an argument about Socratic questioning as a leadership act. The company's espoused values were present in the mission statement and absent in practice; its code of ethics was formally waived, twice, to allow particular partnership arrangements to proceed.

A vice president wrote to the chairman about accounting irregularities and was initially brushed aside, in part because the company's own investigative attorneys had judged the procedures to be in order. When the intervention eventually took effect it removed $1.2 billion from shareholder equity and the company went into freefall.

Why it appears in the book

It illustrates the absence of the elenchus. The narrative of an innovative, high-performing company was never returned to its first premises and never made to account for its internal contradictions. The board had the standing to ask the questions that would have stopped what was happening, and did not.

The person who came closest to performing the function did the three things the book identifies with it: challenging the established cadre, identifying the moral dimension in what others had framed as technical, and surfacing a contradiction the whole narrative was built to conceal. She did not supply a solution. She returned the problem to the room.

The structural point is about the holding environment. There was no space inside the company where that questioning could occur without being sidelined — which is why the argument is not simply that someone should have spoken up.

Questions to consider

  1. Where in your organisation could an uncomfortable question be asked without the asker being sidelined?
  2. What has been framed as technical that is in fact moral?
  3. Which contradiction is the current narrative built to conceal?
  4. Is the cost of asking being weighed against the cost of not asking?

Where it is developed
